Dumping character ROM

Post by Jo Even »

I have an MZ-700 with a Swedish character ROM I want to dump. The ROM is a Mitsubishi M5L2732K, for which my EPROM programming software (MiniPro) does not have a profile for. I have tried to dump it with some other 2732 DIP24 profiles, and while it seems to work the bit-order appears to be reversed when I test it in an emulator.

This is a DOS emulator called MZ700EMU. Any idea if this is a problem with the dumped ROM or the emulator?

Ok, it seems to be an emulator "feature".

Some authors have mirrored the bit combination in each column of the characters.

Hello,

By analyzing Swedish characters, I realized that there were duplicate characters (pink color) and poorly copied characters (in red) compared to Western originals (attached image).
Did I analyze the file incorrectly?

I'm not sure the Swedish font was an official one and was fully qualified. It is probably a third-party selling MZ-700 with a Swedish keyboard and a monitor rom and a font rom they altered.

Are they Japanese? could be a trick to not publish the original font file as such...

The Swedish original font ROM was definitely official in the 700. It was installed by ADDO Sharp, the Swedish distributor. This could, of cause, be a non official ROM anyway. How was it labeled?

I am more interested in the label on the prom. Besides, the MZ-800 were slightly late on the market, and I am not sure if they went through the ADDO Sharp office or any other way.

The duplicate characters are there to avoid patching software. Take a look at my Swedish keyboard and you'll see what I mean :)

The downside is of course that programming on this machine is a b*tch.
