Gaming

Post by mz-80a »

Gaming on the MZ is interesting. If you go back as far as the MZ-80K, a lot of the games were just written in BASIC and pretty simplistic. Even through to the 80A. It seemed much rarer and more interesting if a game had been written in machine code. Even the games tape that came with the computer had only one machine code game (the classic Space Invaders game) but the rest were all BASIC programs. I don't know what it was like on the MZ-700 though...

My impression is that it is quite high amount of machine code games on the MZ-700. A quick look at the download-section for MZ-700 gives 90 BASIC games and 64 machine code games.

I believe the less advanced graphics and limited sound system of these systems in combination with a quite good BASIC made the need for raw machine code less. For many games it was not that much to gain :)

That is true! But I like the better / faster screen updates of machine code games. You only have to look at Lunar Lander on the 80K / 80A..... quite laborious waiting for that rocket to scroll across the screen !! :)

If I recall well, the MZ-80 K and probably the MZ-80 A are suffering the snow effect on an animated display. I mostly saw them with fast games coded in machine language.

That was the 80K. There may even have been a mod to fix that for 80Ks. The 80A had no such problem ;)
