MZ800 is not an euro MZ1500 !!!

Post by Sharpals » Fri Apr 17, 2020 4:18 am

I found here the entry ] MZ800/MZ1500]

https://www.sharpmz.no/dl/search.php?ma ... rch_result

I looked at the following link and found that the MZ800 is equated with the MZ1500.
That is not correct, the hardware is clearly different. The MZ800 has a BITPLANEGRAPHIC, The MZ1500 has a RGB-UDG graphic.

The start of MZ800 , on MZ1500, programs, that use the graphics fails. Same MZ1500 vers MZ800. ( Only some Basicprogramms runs ).

The MZ800 CP/M does not run on the MZ1500 either.
It has no 80 character mode and the text is output in graphics mode.

Booth are downcompatibel to tge MZ700.

There are several websites where MZ-800 is pointed out as a western version of the MZ-1500. Included sharpmz.no and original.sharpmz.org. The situation is quite similar to MZ-80 A vs. MZ-1200: anything which is specific to A won't be compatible with MZ-80 K, MZ-700 and MZ-1500. Moreover MZ-1500 is indeed a MZ-700 with more additional hardware (320x200 PCG 8 colors w/ palette, stereo sound, etc.) as both MZ-700 and MZ-1500 use the same LSI (address decoder and video generator). Even if MZ-1500 has the same outfit as MZ-800 and similar hardware components, the latter has its own system code using a different LSI which can emulate an MZ-700, hence the MZ-700 mode which is not strongly 100% compatible since you can alter the PCG font which doesn't exist on stock MZ-700.

To my opinion, MZ-80 A and MZ-800 are not true MZ-80 K successors, are both western-only computer wanted to be more professional than the other MZs by adding some elements that you find in MZ-80 B series. Note that MZ-80 A and MZ-800 have no compatible successor as well.

Yes several sites says that , i have informed them, but no reaction. KHM has had no time to correct ist ( ols sharpMZ.org ).

I have written it on wikipedia, but after times it was erased :-(

Intressting, the MZ1200 ist an reduced hardware from the MZ80A, but compatible with the MZ80K :-)

The original sharpmz.org will not be updated, it's basically a snapshot of the site before the transition to Wordpress started and should only be considered as a historical document. KHM does not maintain those pages anymore and has not had access to this site for more than a year.

The MZ-1500 page has no information at all, just some pictures. What Sharpals seems to refer to is that the 800-software on the original sharpmz.org is categorized under "800/1500", which clearly is wrong. This information was transferred to the wordpress-page by a script, but can easily be updated. I will remove the 1500 compatibility flag on this software.

Yeah MZ-1200 and MZ-1500 being purely Japanese-only machine it is natural not to find any information at that time. Even now it may be dodgy to find their documentations as they are mostly written in Japanese and that Google search is not an easy place to dig them out.

I have removed the 1500 compatibility flag on all downloads in the database except for those where 1500-compatibility was explicitly mentioned in the description.

Very interesting discussion. MZ 1500 is really interesting machine, which is missing in my collection of MZ computers (MZ 800+FD+Unicard+MZ 1P16+CE 516P, MZ 700+QD). The most comprehensive source of information about the differences can be found on
http://www.8bity.cz/2016/japonsky-sharp ... -a-mz-800/
It seems for me, MZ 800 was ´more professional´ than MZ 1500 and may be closer to MZ 80B with its great graphic capabiities and P-CP/M. But it came too late...
